2008 Deacons

dea·con    Anglicized form of the Greek word diakonos, meaning a "runner", "messenger", or "servant".

-from Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary

At Memorial Baptist Church, "Deacons" are elected by members of the autonomous local church body as defined in 1st Timothy 3:8-13.  "Yokefellows" are selected by each deacon, and assist in carrying out various aspects of the deacon's responsibilities.  Deacons are servants of Jesus Christ and of the church body; they also serve as counselors and leaders of different areas of church life.  Every twelve weeks, one deacon in turn is "Deacon of the Week", and is charged with various duties.

The Deacon Ministry has as its primary focus the support of church members not only during the general watchcare of both the active and homebound congregation, but also in support of members in a crisis situation.  These situations would include such traumatic events as illness, death, loss of a job, and marital problems and divorce.

A secondary focus of the Deacon Ministry is extending the message of Jesus Christ to those individuals who are visiting or are new members of our church.  This will involve contacting all visitors within one week of their visit, providing information on all church programs and Bible Study classes.  Deacons also strive to identify opportunities to reach out to the community, and to implement activities to proclaim the gospel message.  Deacons and their Yokefellows will offer support in the form of prayer, personal consultation, visitation, and referral.  It should be noted that Deacons do not offer expert advice or information, but rather support and Christian love as we journey along the road less traveled.

Through this ministry, we have a group of church family members to call upon in times of crisis, following Jesus' command to Love One Another.
