Bible Buddies

"Bible Buddies" is a noncompetitive program to prepare
K-3rd Graders for Children’s Bible Drill. The material concentrates
on the learning of the Books of the Bible, Bible verses, and Bible stories in a
fun and active way through songs and games. For more information, you may contact the church
office.
For older children, "Bible Drillers" compete in Bible
Drills on the church, associational and state levels for an opportunity to
represent Kentucky at national demonstrations at Glorieta and Ridgecrest.
These annual Bible Drills are fun, exciting ways to help children and then
youths learn key Bible verses and articulate their spiritual beliefs. The
Kentucky Baptist Discipleship Training/Stewardship Department has all the
training and materials you need to participate! Click here
for program details. The year 2002 is “Cycle 1” of the Bible Drill.
"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against
you" (Psalm 119:11).
"Do not merely listen to the word … Do what it says" (James
1:22).
When we were kids, we were encouraged to learn Bible verses "by heart,''
which is an excellent thing to do. Of course, learning "by heart" is
more than just knowing the words. Memorizing is only one of the steps to hiding
God's Word in our hearts. As you help children memorize the words, remember
always to help them learn the meanings of the verses and to do what God's Word
says to do.
Helpful tips:
- Help children understand the meaning of the words. Keep both a Bible
dictionary and a children's dictionary handy so that you or the children can
look up any words that are new or difficult.
- Help the children apply the verse to their own lives. Work to answer some
important questions: What does God want us to do? How can I do this?
- Make discussion an important part of the process. Let the children express
their ideas. Hearing what the children think and feel will help you guide
their learning.
- Remember that there is a difference between short-term recall and
long-term memory. While some children memorize quickly, for most children
(and most adults) learning will not last after a one-time exposure to a
verse. Find ways to use the verse repeatedly throughout the session and the
unit.
- Remember that children have different abilities. Some children are
especially good at memorizing and enjoy it. For other children, memorizing
is more difficult and less enjoyable. Be an encourager to each child.
- Be positive. Keep the focus on understanding and following God's Word,
whether the children can remember all the words or not.
- Use a variety of approaches to involve the children in the learning.
Remember that everyone has a preferred style of learning. Make use of tools
that will appeal to visual, auditory and bodily kinesthetic learners.
- Use methods that are appropriate for the children you teach. Make the
activities challenging enough to be fun and interesting, but simple enough
that the children can be successful.
